Nigeria in West Africa is a relatively new country for Interplast. Many years ago plastic surgeon Cees Spronk (Leeuwarden) worked as a leprosy doctor in Nigeria. After he left he kept in touch with the hospital in Mangu and after a fact-finding mission by himself en anaesthetist Rob Steur in 2006, Interplast Holland was asked to step in this project of organizing two team visits a year.
The missions in 2007 revealed that there is still a lot to be done in the training of anaesthetists and surgeons but also in actually improving facilities, like the operating theatres.
